The main forum for our postgraduate education is the Sándor Radó Advanced Psychoanalytic Seminars (RAPS). The Committee of RAPS is chaired by Peter Bookstein, M.D. (letter from the Chair)

These seminars offer a unique opportunity for creative thinking about important issues in psychoanalysis and related areas with colleagues in an informal setting. RAPS groups provide an important form of intellectual participation in the life of the Association, and may be especially helpful to candidates and new graduates as a way to join our intellectual community. Seminars are open to members of the Association, and to advanced candidates at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research; some also include guests from other institutes or other disciplines.

Groups usually meet monthly, in the evening, at the home or office of one of the members. At present there are five groups which are meeting regularly and several others newly forming which new members are welcome to join.

(effective November, 2009)

  • Senior candidates and graduates of the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training & Research must be (or become) members of the APM to attend RAPS
  • Analysts who are members of another APsaA society (not APM) must pay a $50 annual membership fee (payable to the APM) or join the APM
  • Analysts from another APsaA institute who do not belong to an APsaA society must join the APM to attend RAPS
  • All others are charged the $50 annual membership fee to participate in RAPS
  • At least 4 participants AND 50% of the group must be APM members in order for the group to qualify for RAPS

Please note: These criteria apply to anyone joining a preexisting RAPS and to newly formed RAPS beginning 11/09.  Individuals and groups participating in RAPS prior to this date are exempt from these requirements and fees.

If you are interested in joining any of these groups, please complete the downloadable registration form and contact Dr. Bookstein by phone at 212-665-8674 or by email and also, please indicate if you have interest in chairing or co-chairing a currently forming group. Other groups have been meeting for some time and prefer to continue with their existing membership. We enclose the list of these groups as well to encourage initiating groups of a similar profile or if you are interested in proposing a new group, feel free to contact us to discuss the topic or for help in starting the group. We have the list of RAPS groups on the APM website and will update the status of the currently forming groups often. You can also download the application form from our website.
