presenter: Stephen M. Sonnenberg, M.D.
discussant: Arnold Cooper, M.D.

This presentation is concerned with the problems psychoanalysts encounter across the various modalities of their institute-based work: the struggle to balance educational, administrative, and clinical roles as they are elaborated with candidates and other faculty. A range of situations in which analyst-educators unnecessarily complicate the training experience of candidates will be examined. An important part of this discussion will be an attempt to understand how analysts’ personalities and their clinical work contribute to creating these difficulties. The concept of the “educational boundary,” stemming from contemporary ethical concerns over establishing greater awareness of issues of conduct, will provide the framework for understanding and remedying these problems.
